“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Sustainability defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development.
Sustainability is the Gilkey Organization’s guiding principle. It is a proactive approach to
development that recognizes the need for balance between environmental, societal and
economic needs. Choosing sustainable solutions can result in both short-term and long-term
gains and win-win solutions for developers and the public.
By acknowledging that everything is interdependent, and nature is the ideal model,
sustainability challenges the traditional “cradle to grave” lifecycle model. It brings us full circle
– cradle to cradle. Reaching this high standard requires constant improvement and
knowledge sharing.
Sustainability promotes using resources efficiently to save energy and water; reusing,
reducing and recycling to achieve less waste; utilizing safe and long-lasting materials;
achieving lower emissions and greenhouse gases; building quality into our communities to
ensure economic vitality; and thinking long-term and long-lasting.
There are many highly successful and proven tactics for applying sustainability, which Gilkey
Organization would be happy to introduce to you.
